I had the same need for my laptop.  For calibration, one can use the Minolta
or Philips comparator (or your eye). To effect adjustment of the screen, I use
a shareware program that I found some time back called Lapcolor.  It allows
one to adjust the black level, high lites, low lites, and gammas of the
screen. You can store different setups and recall them manually or
automatically at bootup.  It allows me to achieve a fairly close match to a
CRT. A TFT screen is a must however.
