Noise reduction using multiple transfers

I ran across an interesting patent the other day, US5740146, "Method and
apparatus for reducing noise using a plurality of recording copies".

The idea is that you do a bunch of transfers from different masters
(e.g. different prints of a single film), align the data, and get rid of
stuff (like dirt and scratches) that are different among the various
versions. Seems like it could have merit for recovering some oldies.

The patent was written for audio recordings, but claim 1 seems broad
enough that you would need a license for video as well.

Cheers,
  Chuck Harrison
