Re: crisp 16mm pictures

Hi,

The picture quality that you get from any of the modern Telecine's, look
really good on 16mm. I know that 35mm if fantastic, but 16mm is a hell of a
lot better than tape. I think that if you do upgrade to an Ursa
Gold/Diamond or even an Quadra, with a Renaissance or Pogle ESR, you would
get some really nice looking images, providing you are not having problems
with the shoot or processing.

I think the big problem with tape is the clippers in the camera. With film
whether it is 16mm or 35mm, you capture a larger contrast ratio, so when
you are in the telecine session, and you pull something out of the blacks
there is still information there, and you get a different look. With tape,
you get the whole black "floor" lifting up, and it really limits what you
can do with it. But, I guess this depends how radical a grade that you are
into doing!

If you have a look at the gallery on our web site at
http://www.digitalvoodoo.net/gallary/ , you can see some images, that I
think would be impossible to do from tape, and most of these are from 16mm.

I am an engineer, not a colourist though, and I don't want to blow up the
whole "what is the film look" debate again, but I think 16mm, can be quite
good, and what I see the colorists do with it is fantastic! But this is on
an Ursa Gold! Although, the old FDL-60 did not look to bad, still a lot
better than tape, and that analogue color corrector could really pump out
some amazing video levels!

Grant Petty.
